Let’s face it – it’s impossible to argue with a beach holiday! Pineapples, mojitos, fresh coconuts, and hammocks suspended from palm trees – that’s all one can possibly want from a relaxing getaway isn’t it?!
When it comes to beach holidays, we love our island getaways. There is something magical about flying to a tiny island marooned in the middle of the ocean. Of all the islands and archipelagos we’ve visited so far, Mauritius offers something to suit most holidaymakers and preferences.
Here are 5 reasons you should plan a trip to Mauritius soon:
1) Beaches
Let’s begin with the most obvious reason of them all. Mauritius is home to some of the most stunning beaches in the world. There are dozens of white, powdery beaches on the island, perfect for a spot of sun-bathing. We love Trou Aux Biches and Belle Mare Plage. You can also drop by beaches such as Tamarin Beach and Perybrere Beach, which are popular with locals. Don’t forget to pack a picnic. Such beaches can get extremely crowded on weekends, so make sure you go early and reserve a place for yourself and your family. Most hotels and resorts have beaches that afford complete privacy but you must drop by a local beach or two for a cocktail or fresh coconut from one of the shacks.
2) Affordability
Island getaways are idyllic but can get prohibitively expensive. For instance destinations such as Maldives have only luxury hotels and private islands. This makes it close to impossible to plan a pocket-friendly trip.
Enter Mauritius. To be honest, amazing trip can be had irrespective of your budget. The island has several luxury resorts if you’re on your honeymoon or enjoy a bit of indulgence on holiday. But there’s no dearth of accommodation options if you’re not on a luxurious outing. The island of Mauritius is dotted with beautiful hotels and apartments targeted at all types of holidaymakers. Just pick one that suits your needs and pocket.
It is also easy to dine out for most people in Mauritius. The island has hundreds of shacks that sell delicious seafood curries and a variety of local snacks at pocket-friendly prices. Local markets have colourful fresh produce and an abundant supply of tropical fruits and vegetables. One thing is for sure – you don’t have to visit fine-dining restaurants to eat well in Mauritius.
3) Street Food and THAT sugarcane juice
This brings me to the third point. Irrespective of your preferences, you must sample street food in Mauritius. There are some delectable delights on offer including dholl puri (flatbreads with curried lentils), sweet Victorian pineapples sprinkled with chilli powder, grilled seafood skewers, and creole curries. But there’s one drink that beats all the scrumptious nibbles you’ll find on the streets of Mauritius – freshly squeezed sugarcane juice! Mauritius boasts of some of the best sugarcane in the world and one sip of this fresh juice will have you hooked. Its sweet candy taste is addictive and we just can’t get enough!
4) Road trip feels
Most island getaways make road trips impossible. Often islands are too small or roads are in bad shape. Ferries are the most frequently used mode of transport in archipelagos like Maldives, Seychelles and Fiji Islands. But if you, like us, enjoy road trips, then Mauritius is a no brainer for you. The island is perfectly conducive to a roadtrip. Renting a car will allow you to explore nooks and crannies of the island. It will also help you drive on scenic roads such as The Old Dutch Road or B9 Coast Road at your own pace. We strongly recommend renting a car to explore the island of Mauritius – it’s cheap and makes the holiday so much more fun.
5) Culture
Most beach getaways focus solely on sun, sea, and sand. But a holiday in Mauritius offers so much more than that! Of course, it has more than its fair share of beaches. But the island is also dotted with intricate and colourful temples that pay homage to several Hindu deities. It has museums that celebrate the history of natives. It has rhumeries where one can learn more about the way in which local resources such as sugarcane are used to produce rum. There are village tours that can acquaint you with the heterogeneous population of the island and the rich tales of their forefathers. Mauritius has so much to offer, than a week there just isn’t enough!

I’d always just assumed that a trip to Mauritius would be as expensive as other island getaways! Might have to take a look for next year!
