Why Choose Slovenia for your road trip in Europe?
There are many reasons you should choose Slovenia for a road trip but here are our top #3
- It offers a bit of everything – natural splendour, beaches, seaside towns, fine dining, wine tastings, and UNESCO Heritage sites by the dozen.
- It is small and easy to get around – Slovenia is one of the few countries where everything is a short drive away. In fact, in you don’t enjoy moving around too much on your holidays, you can explore most of the country by taking day trips from the capital Ljubljana.
- It is affordable – Slovenia offers scenery comparable to Switzerland’s villages (Julian Alps and Triglav National Parks), gorgeous seaside towns comparable to Crotia’s Dubrovnik (Piran and Portoroz), and wine regions comparable to Italy’s Tuscany (Vipava Valley) at much cheaper rates. In fact we would say it is one of the most affordable European countries we’ve visited so far.
Budgeting for your road trip in Slovenia
Driving around Slovenia isn’t just fun – it’s affordable too. Expect to spend around €100 per person per day once you are there – this estimate includes costs for car rental, fuel, mid-range accommodation, meals, and activities too.
Accommodation in Slovenia
The best part about exploring Slovenia is that it is a small country. Consequently you could base yourself in a hotel in Ljubljana or Lake Bled and explore most of the places mentioned below on day trips. That way you don’t have to lug your suitcases around every couple of days and the break feels like a real holiday. However we would highly recommend spending at least a couple of days in a hotel overlooking Lake Bled. It is truly special waking up to a view of the stunning lake each morning and it will definitely be one of the highlights of your road trip in Slovenia.
We’ve suggested a couple of our favourite hotels in our article on choosing accommodation for your road trip in Slovenia. The article also includes some other commendable hotels that we stayed at, in case you would like to stay in a few differen locations during your road trip in Slovenia 🙂

Renting A Car In Slovenia
Although it’s possible to get around in Slovenia using public transport, to really explore the gorgeous nooks and crannies of the country we highly recommend you rent a car. We rented a sedan after comparing priceshere, a platform that compares rental prices from all providers. Car rental in Slovenia is much cheaper as compared to France or UK. A comfortable sedan will set you back by around GBP 15/day.
A day-by-day itinerary with tips and suggestions for your road trip in Slovenia
-
Day 1 Fly into Ljubljana
The capital city of Ljubljana is well connected and there are direct flights available from most cities in Europe. It’s also possible to fly into one of the neighbouring countries and drive or take a taxi to Ljubljana. If you are staying in a hotel in downtown Ljubljana, then refrain from picking up your rental car at this stage as parking is quite expensive and not readily available in the centre. Opt for a cab instead.
If you have chosen to base yourself in an Air BnB apartment with free parking, then just pick your car and drive to the apartment.
-
Days 2 and 3 – Explore Ljubljana and drive to Hrase
Ljubljana is one of the most charming European cities we’ve visited in a long time. The city’s cobblestoned alleys are lined with cafes, restaurants, and bars but it continued to retain an old world charm. This combination makes it irresistible to visitors.
Spend your days in Ljubljana walking around the old town and exploring its food markets. Walk past its iconic bridges and sip on a coffee as you watch locals go about their lives. A couple of things we enjoyed in Ljubljana include
- Walking past Triple Bridge, an icon in the city
- Exploring Metelkova Mesta, an alternative complex that boasts of a lot lots of street art and urban culture.
- The architect, Plecnik, is largely responsible for the way the city of Ljubljana looks today. Visit Plecnik’s fascinating house in the suburb of Krakovska, a short walk away from the centre. Even if you do not intend to visit the museum, the pretty suburb makes for an amazing afternoon walk.
- Have a coffee or a drink at the terrace of Neboticnik – a skyscraper in the middle of the city with commanding views of the castle, especially at sunset
- Go for a drive to the picturesque cathedral at Hrase. It’s less than 20 minutes away from Ljubljana but provides a perfect taste of the Slovenian countryside.
There are dozens of amazing restaurants in Ljubljana but here are a couple of eateries we loved:
- Barbarella is really good for vegan food and smoothie bowls. It is extremely affordable and offers scrumptious food that is healthy food
- If you’re in the mood for some gourmet burgers, Hoodburger serves some delicious ones at reasonable prices. The restaurant is extremely popular with locals, so you might have to wait to get a table.
- If you’re celebrating a special occasion, Strelec Restaurant is perfect for a spot of fine dining. Sample medieval Slovenian cuisine that has been modernised for the twenty first century gourmand
-
Day 4 – Take a day trip to the Karst Region
Most tourists to Slovenia end up visiting only Ljubljana and Lake Bled. But we would urge you to include a day trip to the Karst region of Slovenia on your road trip in the country. If you’ve been staying at a hotel in downtown Ljubljana, pick up your rental car on this day, stock up on snacks, and drive into the Slovenian countryside. Here’s what you could do during the day
- Spend the morning at the Skocjan caves – these mysterious caves are less popular than the Postojna caves and this makes them ideal because there are fewer tourists. A two hour tour introduces visitors to this unique caves – you will spot stalactites and stalagmites crafted out of limescale, unique room-like formations, and pools of waters. It is quite dark inside the caves and this only amplifies the mystery of the natural phenomenon. Photography isn’t allowed during the tour but you can click photos on getting out of the caves. You can even go on a scenic hike on leaving the cave.
- You would’ve worked up quite an appetite after walking through the caves and hiking in the area. You could have a picnic in the countryside but if you’re in the mood for a sit-down lunch, then we would recommend Domacija sajna Essen. The gorgeous restaurant, boasts of tables under vines. It serves generous portions of hearty Slovenian food – expect creamy risottos, decadent prosciutto ham, flavourful olive oil with freshly-baked breads.
- After that lunch, continue to explore the area. Stop by the medieval village of Stanjel with characteristic orange roofs– the stunning village has crumbling ruins and a castle with a commanding view. Walking through Stanjel is like going back in time – highly recommended.
- You can also visit Predjama Castle – a large Renaissance castle that is carved into a cave. The castle is surrounded by unending meadows and boasts of a viewpoint that affords stunning views of the Slovenian countryside
- Spend the evening driving through Vipava Valley – the area is known for its vineyards and olive groves – think of it as an offbeat Tuscany. There are lots of opportunities for wine tasting in Vipava Valley – we loved Wine Bar and Shop Faladur, a boutique gourmet wine tasting experience. This is also the perfect place to pick up a bottle (or five) of Slovenian wine for your road trip – it’s the perfect way to wrap up your day on the road.
After a busy day of exploring the Karst Region and Vipava Valley, you can head back to your hotel in Ljubljana. Alternatively you could stay in the area – there is a gorgeous Slovenian B&B near the Skocjan caves. Hotel Jama, located minutes away from Predjama Castle is another option.
-
Days 5 & 6 – Explore seaside towns of Piran, Portoroz, and Izola
It’s time to take a short break from exploring the lush green countryside and head to the glistening blue waters of the Adriatic Coast. Almost seven years ago when we drove to Dubrovnik in Croatia, we fell in love with it. But subsequent years and Game of Thrones have made sure that Dubrovnik is now one of the most frequented cities in Europe. If you want to escape the tourist hordes and experience the splendor of the Adriatic Coast, head to the Slovenian seaside towns of Piran, Portoroz, and Izola. It’s hard to describe the feeling of gazing at historical towns with terracotta rooftops rimmed by blue water. Climb the medieval walls of Piran and you’ll know what we mean. Spend your days sampling fresh seafood in waterfront eateries, sunbathing, or sipping on cocktails.
If you are short on time, you can easily explore the Adriatic Coast on a day trip from Ljubljana. But if you have time on you, then we would highly recommend staying in Izola for a night or two as Piran can get quite crowded during summer months.
Days 7 and 8: Drive to Lake Bled and fall in love
Lake Bled is the most visited site in Slovenia. Ordinarily we are wary about places that are so hyped. But sometimes, just sometimes, those places actually live up to the hype. Lake Bled is one of those places. The azure waters of this sylvan lake seem to change colour every hour – perhaps this is what makes it endlessly fascinating. I just know this – I could spend hours staring at Lake Bled from sunrise right through to sunset. A word of warning – try not to visit Lake Bled on the weekend as it can get incredibly crowded!
While you are at the lake, make sure you do the following:
- Visit the Bled Castle for a panoramic view of the lake
- Sip on a cup of coffee and sample the traditional Bled Cream Cake (too creamy and rich for us but most people seem to love it!) at Bled Castle’s café. You could even stick around for a meal at the in-house restaurant.
- Don’t waste money going to the island on Lake Bled just to ring a bell – it’s overcrowded and almost always, prettier from a distance.
- Rent a traditional wooden boat and go rowing on Lake Bled
- Visit the neighbouring Vintar Gorge and Sum Waterfall to get a bit of exercise and marvel at Slovenia’s natural wonders.
- Go for a hike to Ojstrica and Osojnica for the most magnificent view of the lake
If you’re looking for a unique place to spend time around Lake Bled, then consider the quirky glamping huts at Camping Bled. These cute little huts offer all creature comforts, including private hot tubs and bathrooms, proper beds, power points, and generous breakfasts. The best part is that they are extremely affordable. However since they are quite little, book your stay just for a night or two. Spend the rest of your time at Lake Bled at Grand Hotel Toplice, which boasts of a stunning view of the lake. Walking out of the hotel room onto your balcony overlooking Bled Castle is an experience we will remember for a long time to come.
Days 9 and 10: Jamnik, Lake Bohinj, and Triglav National Park
Once you’ve had your fill of panoramas at Lake Bled, it’s time to explore some of Slovenia’s most scenic sights. You can continue to stay at Lake Bled but spend your days driving deeper into the Julian Alps and exploring everything the area has to offer. We suggest driving to the following spots:
- Jamnik – The drive from Lake Bled to Jamnik is a short but incredibly scenic one. Jamnik doesn’t feature on most itineraries of Slovenia but we highly recommend a visit to its hilltop cathedral. You will love the view – definitely one for keen photographers.
- Lake Bohinj – Lake Bohinj is an alpine lake just 30 minutes away from Lake Bled. It is a lot more peaceful than Lake Bled and it’s easy to find the entire lakeshore to yourself if you walk away from the entry point into Bohinj. We suggest visiting Lake Bohinj at sunset – it is at its best at that time of the day.
- Triglav National Park – Don’t stop at Lake Bohinj. Continue your exploration of the picturesque Triglav National Park. You will spot gorges, canyons, waterfalls, and bright green waters everywhere you look. Don’t forget to pack a picnic 🙂
Days 11 and 12: Drive to Soca River Valley
Less than 2 hours away from Lake Bled, Soca River Valley is the epicentre of adventure sports in Slovenia. Base yourself in Kobarid, Kanal, or Tolmin and spend your day(s) ziplining through the valley, rafting in Soca River, hiking (we love the Tolminka Gorge hike!), bungee jumping, or paragliding. The characteristic green water of Soca River will make you fall in love with it in no time at all.
Day 13: Introduce yourself to Idrija and Kamnik
So far you’ve driven to areas that are familiar to most tourists. Now it’s time to drive into the Slovenian hinterland and acquaint yourself with the beating heart of Slovenia by visiting areas only locals know about.
Drive to Kamnik which is home to tumbling springs and scenic waterfalls. Expect picture postcard panoramas everywhere you look – make sure you drive all the way to Kamniska Bistrica – springs famous for their translucent aquamarine water. You won’t find any tourists (or people!) here and you’ll LOVE it 🙂
Next drive to Idrija – the region is known for its erstwhile mercury mines and intricate handmade lace. It even boasts of a lace university. But you are here to explore some offbeat and truly panoramic points of view. Drive to St. Anton’s Church on the top of a hill for a gorgeous view of the surrounding areas. If you’re in the mood, hike further up, and you’ll get stunning bird’s eye views of Idrija. While driving out, stop by one of the 17 hanging bridges suspended over River Idrijca. You are bound to feel like you’ve stepped into a fairytale as you gingerly cross a bridge or two.
It is easy to explore Kamnik and Idrija if you’re staying in Ljubljana but there are tons of gorgeous properties in the area. Hotel Kendov Dvorec is an intimate and luxurious Relais and Chateaux property with just 20 rooms. It boasts of incredible views over Idrija and guests are treated to decadent Slovenian cuisine at every meal. If you would like something more affordable Penzion Repnik is an idyllic guesthouse situated in the lap of mother nature in Kamnik. Peter, the manager, is friendly and leaves no stone unturned to make a stay at Penzion Repnik an incredible one!
Day 14 Fly back from Ljubljana

Hey Becca – it’s quite the gem of a country – we had so much fun driving in Slovenia 🙂
This year, instead of a long holiday, we are focusing on much-needed house renovation tasks. But I have bookmarked this page so that when we start planning for 2018 I can come straight back here for ideas.
Hey that’s great Teresa – wish you tons of luck with the renovation 🙂
Wow! the views are just stunning. The waterfall looks great, I have never thought about visiting Slovenia, so so glad you shared this
Glad you enjoyed reading our itinerary for a roadtrip in Slovenia Natasha 🙂 That waterfall was stunning indeed
Very very spooky to read this post today! Our eldest daughter was competing in Croatia last week and had to travel to Slovenia to sit one of her GCSEs. She went with my husband who said it was one of the most beautiful journeys he had ever driven!
Oh how cool is that – so good to know your daughter enjoying driving through Slovenia as much as we did 🙂
And now I wanna spend my entire honeymoon in this country. Thanks for the itinerary. One question though. How do you manage to such gorgeous pictures of both of you? Any tips!
Hey Rubal – we carry a tripod along 🙂 Do send us photos from your honeymoon in Slovenia
One more question Savi, if you don’t mind. We are planning to visit both Croatia and Slovenia in the same trip. Will that be a good idea? Being a GoT fan, I really want to visit Croatia. What are the low budget options available for travelling from Slovenia to Croatia?
Thanks in advance.
Sure Rubal – combining Slovenia and Croatia is a great option. You can take a bus from one country to the next 🙂
I m planning to visit slovenia.. which month is best to explore this little beauty ??
Hey Sripal – summer months are ideal if you aren’t into skiing – try going between May and July 🙂
My husband and I love summer road trips, although we’ve never taken one in a foreign country. Slovenia looks incredible .. your pictures are as pretty as postcards. Maybe one day we’ll be able to visit x

Thanks a ton Mark – so happy you enjoyed our itinerary for a road trip in Slovenia. There is so much more to the country than Lake Bled 🙂
Amazing post on Slovenia!:)
Just curious on where you guys bought those slouchy hats which is in the lake bled pictue? 😉
Hi Sangeetha,
Thank you so much 🙂 We picked those beanies from France 🙂
You have pretty much covered all bases here with your trip and of course your blog. Am thinking of heading to Slovenia with my wife mid-August. Would you recommend it weather-wise? Also, the week itinerary seems perfect and i think we’ll copy+paste it quite shamelessly but with gratitude.
Hi Harshad,
It’ll be amazing weather-wise in August. It might be a bit crowded since school holidays are on but you’ll still love it. Send us photos from your trip when you’re back 🙂
I saw Lake Bled on a travel show years ago and we are finally going in August! Thank you for the day trip ideas and hiking options! I can’t wait to get there! I follow you on Instagram, thanks for filling my feed with beautiful photos!
Hey Lindsay,
Thanks a lot – you’ll surely love Slovenia and Lake Bled. Happy to hear you enjoy our Insta feed 🙂
Slovenia isn’t a place I ever even considered visiting, but you’ve certainly just changed my mind! What an amazing sounding (and looking) country!
Hey Adele,
Slovenia is really pretty 🙂 We hope you make it there super soon and get to see it for yourself 🙂
I spent 4 days driving around Slovenia last year and it was absolutely gorgeous! I’m happy to report that I was able to squeeze in a lot of your recommendations on my trip. i wasn’t able to find the time to make it to Lake Bohinj as we prioritized Lake Bled. I absolutely loved Piran though!
Hey Pam,
So happy to hear that 🙂 Isn’t Slovenia amazing? Lake Bled is definitely more scenic, albeit a bit more crowded. You’re right – Piran is a gorgeous little seaside town!
Hope you get back to Slovenia soon!
Hi Savi Vid,
For a week on slovenia, which cities/town would you recommend to stay?
We are fine with driving but don’t want to keep moving luggage every 2 days.
We plan to land by noon on a saturday and return by Sunday morning flight to London.
Hey Paljo – you can just stay on the outskirts of Ljubljana. Most sites are easily accessible from there and there are some gorgeous rental cottages in the area 🙂
same here so its okay to just stay in one or two place the whole week yea? what would you recommend. Thanks alot!
Yes it is. Would recommend renting a cottage near Bled or Ljubljana 🙂
HI Savi, Vid,
First, love all your pics! They are so distracting that I keep browsing about travel destinations even on a Monday mornings at work. I am so inspired by this blog that my hubby and I are off to Slovenia this September. I have been researching more about renting cars and I have not been reading not so good reviews about rental companies and traffic police out there. We are keen on renting a car, but have our own apprehensions now. My husband has a US licence and drove there for about 8-10 years while I have never driven anywhere outside India. What do you guys recommend? Should we just go for it or now?
Hey Kirtana,
Thanks a lot 🙂 All our effort is well worth it when we are able to convince people to go visit a new place 🙂
Driving should not be a problem, especially if one of you has driven in the US for 10 years. Just don’t break any rules and you’ll be absolutely fine.
Hope you do rent a car – the experience becomes much better when you’re driving.
Great post and promo for Slovenia. Well done, but you should really incorporate Ptuj into your road trip, along with nearby Maribor. Bags of history and character in Ptuj ie. Roman, imposing castle, wine producing region. Maribor, a bustling second city, its Lent festival, 300 year old vine and historic centre are a real draw!!
Hey Charlie,
Thanks a lot 🙂 Yes surely we will be visiting Slovenia again very soon and will visit all these gorgeous places 🙂
Thanks for such a great post about Slovenia. You should also visit Dolenjska region with amazing castle Otocec, Kostanjevica, Novo mesto… and Ptuj is also beautiful little town.
Dear Natalija,
Thanks! Sure, we thought we should leave a few places for the next trip to Slovenia – it’s one of our favourite countries in Europe now 🙂
Hey Savi and Vid
Great post!
I’m planning to go to Slovenia next year.
By your experience, do you think it’s safe for a girl to travel by car alone?
Thanks in advance!
Hey Rafeela – yes it’s absolutely safe to travel solo in Slovenia 🙂
Hey Savi & Vid,
We are planning a holiday to Slovenia inspired by your trip there 🙂 Will mid October be a good time to go there and what will the weather be like then?
Hey Suruchi – October is a great month but do bear in mind it is quite cold and not as green during Autumn months 🙂
Hey..I am a travel & everytime someone asks me about slovenia I always try not to sell this country as I always thought there was nothing much to do. Reading your blog & other articles has changed my mindset completely. I am definitely going to send more people to this county & I cant wait to visit Slovenia. You guys are amazing & so inspiring.
Thanks for your appreciation and kind words Reshma. We are overjoyed to know that our post proved to be meaningful to you.
Hi Savi and Vid!
Greetings!
Your travel stories inspire wanderlust addicts like me.
Taking inspiration from you I’m planning to go solo to Europe soon.
Slovenia will be part of my trip.
I wanted to ask for a help from you regarding road trip in Slovenia. Can you please tell if ILP is needed for driving in slovenia or you can drive on Indian License?
Thanks a lot!
Good luck for all your endeavours! 🙂
Hey Umang – thanks a ton. You can drive on an Indian license in Slovenia no problem 🙂
Very nice trip report of my country. I live between Bled and Ljubljana and I also love mountains, forests, green meadows, clean drinking water…..
Hi Bojan – so happy you enjoyed reading our itinerary for a roadtrip in Slovenia 🙂
Such an amazing article with all the details.. thanks a mil… would you recommend traveling to Slovenia in March?
Hey Vidhya – Slovenia will be gorgeous in March but do remember it’ll be cold and weather can be really unpredictable that time of year, so expect grey days occasionally
hey is it easy to drive in slovenia? i have never driven outside of India. Also can we drive on indian license or need an international driving license?
You can drive in Slovenia on an Indian Driving License if you are a short term tourist in the country 🙂
Your article is great and meaningful. Thank you for sharing this message
hey after this article we are planning a trip by road.. is there parking available in portoroz and izola? or should we leave the car in piran?
There are car parks around each town Pinky – send us photos from Slovenia when you visit 🙂
Hie..such an amazing and detailed article..very helpful…is slovenia a good option in the winters as well? if we want to experience a winter wonderland as other European destinations tend to be heavy on the pockets
Hey Radhika – Slovenia is supposed to be stunning during winter months when it’s all snowed under 🙂
Hi, I was thrilled and amazed by your slovenia blog. I am tempted to visit slovenia this summer (May 2018).
is it the right time ? Also can you help us with budget?
Hi Hitesh – yes May is a great time to visit Slovenia 🙂
Hey there rockstars, really appreciate you guys taking time out to write such a fantastically detailed post about Slovenia. Husband and I are planning to take a trip in August and were flying in to Vienna. Would you recommend taking a rental car from vienna itself or in slovenia directly?
Hey Nikita – would recommend taking the car after you’re done exploring Vienna as it’s a pain to find parking in Vienna. You can rent it from and drop it off at Vienna Airport 🙂
Hey Guys, i have been following u guys from a very long time. Thanks for the wonderful beauty u showcase every time.. Love your articles and pictures. I am going to Slovenia next week. Even more excited after reading your post.
That’s awesome. Hope you have an amazing time 🙂
Hey Savi & Vid…this was a very helpful read, as always. Planning to undertake an abridged version of this trip in Sept. Wanted to know whether an Indian license works there. Also, would you recommend attempting the Vrsic pass for someone who would be driving an automatic on the left hand drive for the first time? I am a decent driver on Indian conditions but have never driven outside.
Hey you’ll be fine no worries and an Indian License works in Slovenia 🙂
Hi.. i am pratiksha from india. huge fan of yours. I want to travel to Slovenia in September so can i plan to austria with slovenia? How much it will cost in austria for a week?
Hi Pratiksha – that depends on the kind of hotels you choose but would suggest setting aside at least €100 for food, activities, and transport in Austria 🙂
Hi Savi, your post makes me want to take the next road trip to Slovenia. So far we’ve done New Zealand and Norway road trips. Which one would you suggest next one? 🙂
How about Iceland? You’ll love it 🙂
hi guys im going to be following your 1 week itinerary in Slovenia could you please let me know where all you stayed in the week ?

Hi Savi & Vid,
I read your post and its really helpful to plan a trip to Slovenia. Just need a suggestion on below.
Will November a good option to visit Slovenia ?
Hey Rachana – it’ll be cold in November but other than that, it’s a good time to visit 🙂
Hi guys… what a beautiful post. :):) Feeling inspired from it, we might end up here in the next summers !!!
I want to check a quick thing- since flights are generally expensive from India to Slovenia, what alternate place would you recommend to enter into Slovenia, so that we can save on the cost of flights?
Hey Smriti – yes. Would recommend Germany, Turkey, or Croatia to kick start the trip (all 3 are conveniently connected to India), followed by Slovenia 🙂
Hello Guys…Read this amazing post and am a fan !!!….. To be honest, I had never heard much about Slovenia and never though of it as a place for vacation. But you have completely changed that. Stunningly beautiful country. Great photos, you guys. Everything looks so pretty.
I am thinking of doing Hungary, Slovenia, Croatia and Mostar next May-June ( around 15-20 days) along with my wife. What do you suggest? Also, I am interested in a road trip in Slovenia. I have an Indian Driving License. Suggestions ?
Sounds great and you can rent a car and drive with an Indian Driving License in Europe
Hello Guys we have planned to do a road trip in slovenia this april. Need to know if we need a international license or Indian license will work
Hey
I drove with an Indian license and it sufficed. It never hurts to have an International Driving Permit so may as well get that if you have the chance

Hey Trisha,
Glad we could help. As for that location, don’t remember the exact spot but you’ll see this on highway 111 when you’re going from Llubljana to Piran (from what I remember after a petrol station (around Jagodje / Dobrava). Hope that helps
Hi Savi,

Hi, we are planning for a road trip in Slovenia in March for our first anniversary.
How is the weather in March? Is it too cold?
Hi Apoorva,
It’s difficult to predict weather but it *should* be fairly cold in March in Slovenia
What wonderful wonderful itinerary.. we are going to Slovenia for 2 weeks in December.. what are your thoughts would that be a good time.. or should be skip Slovenia and do only Croatia.. I presume trying to cover Slovenia and Croatia both in two weeks would be too ambitious.. kindly suggest
Hi Deepanjali,
A trip to Slovenia in winter months will be absolutely magical 🙂 You can definitely spit your time between Slovenia and Croatia (a week each)
