Sometime last year Vid penned a post on 10 Things You Don’t Know About Us – he thought he’d take advantage of my being away and pen lots of embarrassing facts about me. It went on to become one of the most popular articles on our website and so many of you have been asking for another post on those lines 🙂

Well it’s finally here. Only this time we’re doing it slightly differently – I’m writing 5 things you don’t know about Vid and Vid’s penning 5 things you don’t know about me. He’s promised me he won’t be mean – we’ll see how that goes 😉 Hope you enjoy 10 Things You Don’t Know About Us – Part Deux

5 Things You Don’t Know About Vid

1) The secret about Vid’s fangirls

Let me kick this off with something that makes Vid blush tomato red.

If you’ve been reading Bruised Passports for a while, you probably know both of us are passionate about women’s education and equality. Both of us firmly believe that truly happy relationships can exist only when one celebrates individuality and questions (and bins!) stereotypes based on gender. Neither of us ‘wears the pants in the family’ (yep, that’s one stereotype we loathe!) – we take all decisions together 🙂

Now I know feminist men are all the trend these days, ever since Justin Trudeau spoke about it (love him!). But here at Bruised Passports we’ve been seeing that trend ever since 2013. Back in 2013, we made Bruised Passports’ first ever video and I called Vid a feminist. We got lots of fan-mail from teenage girls addressed to him after that. So cute 🙂

3 years later that adjective still holds true – any of our friends/family will tell you this, Vid can often be found getting into discussions and arguments while questioning sexist remarks and contesting patriarchal stereotypes – I really respect him for it and seems like I’m not the only one 🙂 Even today, a lot of the young readers we meet want a photo with Vid and they’ll always tell him they love him for being a vociferous feminist! Yay!

Here’s the video I’m talking about:

If you didn’t know already, we hate sexist stereotypes – true happiness can’t co-exist with gender biases 🙂

2) Vid’s love affair with photography

If Vid’s family could change one thing about him – it would have to be his restless nature! Vid can’t sit still in one place for more than 10 minutes – you’ll find him pacing up and down rooms looking for things to do.

But all that changes when he has a camera in hand – he can stay still for 2 hours to make a 10 second long time lapse video, he can sit outside in extreme temperatures (think -30°C at the Arctic Circle!) to get that perfect shot of the sunset…. the list goes on!!

That wanaka tree lake wanaka night sky
The night sky over Lake Wanaka – one of Vid’s favourite shots, for which he stayed out for the better part of a night

3) Vid’s the party clown

If you’re looking for giggles – Vid’s your person! In fact he’s infamous amongst our friends for saying the most absurd things with a straight face.

This spells trouble for people who meet him for the first time because they always take his jokes at face value. Ergo I need to carry around a disclaimer stating ‘Take everything he says with a pinch of salt’ whenever we meet a bunch of new people. It’s not a fun job!!

Vid – always the one clowning around! 😉

4) Vid and I are constantly bartering household duties

I know it’s probably considered good practice to be able to do everything oneself but Vid and I are constantly bartering household duties when we live in a house – I love cooking and hate ironing – Vid irons, I cook.  Vid shops for groceries, I vacuum the house. The list goes on. But we take turns at washing laundry – that’s one barter I haven’t been able to settle in my favour YET! It’s an ongoing project 😉

5) Vid’s a shiny disco ball – of optimism!

It’s no secret. Both of us are glass half-full kinda people. But I won’t lie – it doesn’t take much to get me down in the dumps. If you’ve been following Bruised Passports for a couple of years, you’d know I was plunged into an abyss of darkness when my dad (he was my best friend!) passed away. For a year, I couldn’t even talk about it or get myself to go back to work. My recovery took really long, but Vid nursed me back to health like one does a baby. Every single day he’d tell me to value what I have – amazing friends, a gorgeous family, a job I love – instead of plunging myself deeper and deeper into grief. Thanks to his outlook towards life, I find myself getting better and better every day. Vid makes me see the light at the end of the tunnel every single day!!

It’s true – nobody’s life is perfect. But it’s better to concentrate on the good bits, leave out the negativity and clutter that seem to define modern life, and celebrate the everyday 🙂

Let me give you an example! On our recent road trip to Ladakh, there were many days when it took us over 12 hours just to drive 200 kms. All along the way, there were traffic jams and barely-there roads but then there were spectacular views too. This is pretty representative of life itself – look to the left and there are traffic jams and muck, look to the right and there’s gorgeosity. Life is truly what you make of it – Niggles come and go, optimism and smiles last 🙂

Perspective - a crazy traffic jam or gorgeous panoramas. What do you see?

I’ll let Vid take over from here – remember point 4? I think you’ll get a lot of it soon 😉

5 Things You Don’t Know About Savi

1) Savi’s vocabulary is….errr…

Teehee – I can see all of Savi’s friends nodding their heads right about now. Savi uses the longest words while having conversations and writing. It amuses her friends (and me!) to no end. I blame it on years of studying English Literature.

In her world, it’s never ‘drunk’, always ‘inebriated’, it’s never ‘middle-class’, always ‘bourgeois’, it isn’t ‘repeat’ but ‘regurgitate’…. I could go on. I always need to proof-read blog posts on Bruised Passports in public interest – to weed out all the long words in order to make them readable.

She’s learning to reign it in but a short word is always followed by a cheeky “see I’m using short words” grin. There’s also no guarantee for the lapses that follow a drink or two. What do I tell you? The inebriated bourgeois starts regurgitating her favourite long words after a beer (sorry Savi, couldn’t help it) :-p

2) Savi doesn’t like expensive gifts but…

If you know the story about our $5 engagements rings, then you probably know about Savi’s disdain for expensive gifts. But she always asks for the craziest gifts – coupons for trolley rides around airports. Seriously who needs those? I still don’t know how I get blackmailed into it every single time!! Let me dig up a super old photo for you:

3) Bruised Passports is the way it is because of this elf

Savi’s the most conscientious worker in the world. I click photos for our website, manage our Facebook page, and help with the technical end of things but Bruised Passports is what it is because of Savi. She works so hard on all aspects and refuses to sacrifice our social media schedule or publishing articles for anything in the world. She can’t “let it be” – that phrase doesn’t exist in her dictionary. Instead she’ll fret, worry, burn the midnight oil, and somehow finish everything. Why? Because a missed post means a red blotch on the Excel sheet in her mind. Once a teacher, always a teacher 😉 This might be why she finished her PhD in just 3 years, much to everyone’s surprise!

All jokes apart, I’m so proud of her of being the perfect boss but I won’t lie – her conscientious behaviour amuses me to no end sometimes. Especially when she’s standing in the middle of a remote desert, wrinkling her nose and looking to the heavens for….. mobile connectivity, so she can upload an article or social media post on time 😉 Guffaws follow, I can’t help it

4) Savi loves naps

I think if Savi was born in Spain, she’d be a professional siesta-er (if there be such a thing!). She loves her naps and I find her crawling into bed most afternoons, irrespective of where we are! That’s not all – no sooner has an airplane or car started moving, Savi’s a-sleeeeeeeep!!

5) Savi lives in a fairy tale and makes sure everyone around her does too

It’s time for a story 😀

This one is about a li’l thing but one that is reflective of our take on life itself, so I thought I thought I’d share it with you. We often get asked how we end up in fairytale scenarios in life. Well this is how…

A few months ago, we rented our car to explore Latvia. On our last day there, we drove through our favourite stretches of the Latvian countryside. Mid-way, we spotted this magical woodland and decided to drive in there for a picnic. If I was left to my own devices, I would’ve just slapped sandwiches on a rug and feasted on them. But Savi dragged me for a rambly walk through woodland lanes dripping with wildflowers and berries, collected wildflowers, and arranged a picnic spread between prancing with wild squirrels. I put on some songs and VOILÁ a picture-perfect picnic.

To LIVE THE DREAM, you don’t need a lot of money or luck – you just need INCLINATION & TIME (and a dreamy-eyed girl hellbent on dancing with unicorns!). Then you can create your own fairy tale – just make sure it’s based on happiness and equality! 🙂

  1. Loved this one too! Though after meeting you two, I could guess few things mentioned here. Savi, you are my favourite. I see a bit of my reflection in you or maybe vice versa. Though my husband is totally opposite of what Vid is. He is very stable, calm and patient and realistic. I wish he could meet you but he had to travel so maybe next time. Keep smiling. Believe in fairy tales. Travel and take us along. I love you guys.

    1. No problem Surabhi – we’ll definitely meet super soon. It was so amazing seeing you at the Delhi meetup – as I said that day, your comments light up my day. Much love 🙂

    1. Thanks a million Akanksha – so happy to hear that. Welcome to the Bruised Passports family – I really hope you continue to enjoy our adventures around the world 🙂

  6. Fabulous! You guys are so cute together 🙂 Hope everyone has the same perspective towards life. Travelling teaches you a whole lot of new things. I read all of your posts which are so fascinating wanting me and my husband to go to each place to experience all of it. Keep inspiring people to travel so that they have less time for their minds to wander away. There is always that road less traveled which has made all the difference. 🙂

    1. Thanks Kavya – travelling sure teaches one a whole lot of stuff. So happy to hear that our posts inspire you two to explore new places – yay 🙂

  7. Hey Sav & Vid.. You guys are adorable & I love the take you have on travel.. Also I should admit that you have passed the travel bug to me.. Cheers!

    1. Thanks a ton – we’re SO happy we’ve managed to pass on the travel bug to you -yay, mission accomplished 🙂

  8. I absolutely love this! Savi, you remind me of me and Vid of my partner. Our goal is to travel like this…one day *sigh*

    1. Thanks a lot Kellie – my favourite part about blogging is connecting with like-minded souls across the world, so I’m really happy you stumbled on Bruised Passports. I hope you two get to travel TONS super soon 🙂

  9. Point no. 1 about Savi is absolutely TRUE! And Vid, fantastic photography! Great post, superb blog, two lovely people!

    1. I KNEW her friends would agree with Point no. 1 😉 Thank you so much – both of us LOVE hearing from you 🙂

  10. Savi you’re a doll. Like you even I didn’t get a diamond for my wedding, I traded it for a trip instead and have been doing this for past 4 years we got married. A trolley ride is a better idea over a diamond anyday. I am gonna try this one on my next trip ?

    1. Thanks Kamakshi – high five for being the different ones 🙂 Trolley rides come highly recommended from me – you need to try them!

  11. This post is so so cute and mushy Savi and Vid. I am reading your blog from last couple of years and in love with it.
I want to try your itinerary for German Alps road trip very soon.
You both are amazing together and I totally believe having an out of the world partner takes life to different level. I am glad to say I am lucky in that way (blessed with an amazing boy friend errrrr husband now 🙂

Loads of love and wishes for both of you.

    1. Thanks a ton Shefali. I agree with you – having an equally crazy partner in crime makes life so much more fun 🙂 Do send us photos when you visit the German Alps

  12. Hey Guys, thank you! One a crappy weekday morning, knowing you could be heading for trouble at work! This blog, you guys and especially this particular post makes this bourgeois girl inebriated with happiness (if i have said this right)!

But work isn’t all thats about me (thankfully!). I find my daily dose of inspiration in blogs like yours. Enough to turn my workaholic boy (& me) into travel smitten kittens! With crazy work schedules and life in a city like London we managed to see 6 countries in one year. So you are spot on with inspiration! 🙂

Here’s wishing you both many more travels and highways strewn with happiness, love, joy!
    Vidhu

PS: Vid, you are a brilliant photographer – those pictures play an integral role in deciding our next stop!

    1. Hehe thanks Vidhu – I know I need to show your comment to Savi. We’re so happy to hear you managed to visit 6 new countries last year. Yay. That’s our mission accomplished then 😉 I hope all is well in London town – we miss it so!

  13. I’ve read your blog since the very beginning. And I’m now a resident doctor with nil free time who loves traveling. Such a bad combination. However, your posts keep me a little bit sane. Vicarious traveling, love you guys to bits!

Savi it’s so positive to see any of ur pics , it refreshes and lighten up the mood , u smile like Angel , a naughty one , but full of life , as Vid revels there is a workaholic girl behind the face of carefree girl , love you a lot , Did you are truly a good example in our Indian society , very few can be so favorable to feminine , I liked yrs association , keep travelling and making every bit of life.

    1. Thanks a ton for your little note Sonali 🙂 So happy to hear you enjoy reading our blog – we love having you along for the ride

  15. It was wonderful knowing all this about you guys, now I love you even more! 🙂 It is always a delight to come across feminist men, and I must say I respect Vid a lot more for that. Savi, I simply love the way you write (inebriated bourgeois?! 😀 ) and I feel your words bring Vid’s excellent photography to life. I look forward as much to reading your posts as much as I do to Vid’s photography.
One thing about myself: I really wanted to study English literature, but ended up pursuing my love for science and becoming an engineer. But I remain a voracious reader and I love Jane Austen and Wodehouse. Savi, I’d love to know what your favourites are. 🙂
P.S: I SO wish I lived in Delhi so I could meet you guys in person. I really hope you come to Bangalore sometime! 🙂

    1. Thanks a ton Ramya – yay. I belong to the school of thought that believes one can create magic with the playthings that are words 🙂 I love Austen too but some of my favourites include Virginia Woolf, Murakami, and Kafka 🙂

  16. Great Post Savi and Vid.

    1. Thanks a ton for your little note Deborah – so happy to hear you enjoy reading Bruised Passports. Yay 🙂

  18. Hi Savi/Vid ,

Theres a famous dialogue from one of mohanalal movies ( malayalam)
“Vayasaam kalathu chaaru kaserayil irinnu orkan kore madhura smaranakal vekkanam”

means – While we are healthy , we should be keen to create wonderful memories to cherish while we are at our old age , relaxing on a recliner chair 🙂

I am sure this makes absolute sense in your lives. Happy to see you two smiling . Gorgeous couple 🙂
    Stunning photography Vid 🙂

    1. Thanks a ton for your li’l note Prem- we completely agree with that quote, which is why we prioritise experiences over all else 😀

  19. OMG…this is the 1st post I’ve read of bruised passports and I know what’s coming my way. And then I read this and the things that make the two of you SaviVid!!!
I’d been going through a rough phase in identifying with the girl I wanted to marry, and after I read this post I saw the truth, you’ve got to be crazy for n with each other and always ready to pull n push each other towards greatness. That is what makes so much chemistry between two individuals that exists despite all the storms in the sea! And I’m glad that reading this, I know I made the right call to wait for that right person to come along!!!!

  30. The blogs you write, the pictures you upload, and the love that you both share are such treat to the eyes and the heart.I recently got married to this incredible man who is a mirror reflection of Vid. Sounds crazy right? I can so relate to the part where you guys do the household chores together and patriarchy never overshadows the feelings you have for each other. What amuses me more is Savy’s vocabulary ❤. I am an English Literature student and most of the time my husband whines about hurling literary jargons at him. Husbands are funny sometimes and too cute, right? I just followed your instagram handle and watched your vlog on Seychelles vacay( read the blog too). We are willing to visit Seychelles this November for honeymoon. Please let us know if it is a good idea to visit the island in November and keep spreading the warmth and love that you always do.

Sending you best wishes and love all the way from Bangalore. 🙂

    1. Dear Arpita,

Congratulations on your wedding 🙂 Life is even better when shared with a like-minded and compassionate person 🙂

So happy to hear that you enjoy our work. Seychelles will be great in November and you’ll definitely have the time of your lives.

Have a great trip and do share photos when you get back.

      Much love
